Gimp on OSX, Mac App Store and Funding
Hello Folks.
I'm a simple user, with some very limited knowledge of software developing but with some knowledge of management and having read many discussions on OSS and as a very raw user of Gimp on OS X i would to suggest something to this discussion list.
I'm a simple user, with some very limited knowledge of software developing but with some knowledge of management and having read many discussions on OSS and as a very raw user of Gimp on OS X i would to suggest something to this discussion list.
I went to the Gimp on Mac site the other day for seeing if any updates were available and saw the plead for help of the mac developer as he is only one and seriously needs help. I can't help on the programming unfortunately but i had other idea.
As you know Apple is launching its App Store on Mac OS X somewhere in the next month. This will allow for a significant number of users an easy way to look for software, download and install it, with reduced complexity and steps. Quite similar (equal) to the package manager in all of the linux distros but most domestic users never used/tried a linux system so..
My idea is this: Put Gimp on the App Store. with a symbolic fee, let's say 2.5$ . If the 70/30 ratio of apple store is applied, then that should be 1.75$ for each download. This could be a significant source of income for the Gimp Project, the Gimp on Mac and could possibly allow a single developer to be committed full-time to it. This symbolic fee could be either for each 2.X updates or perpetual, that is open to discussion, i'm not that sure on the details.
Now before any flamming and discussion on the GPL, i would like to state that the App Store webpage on Gimp should clearly state that this is opensource software, that you can download the source and/or the binary from the project page and that this is essentially a donation to the project combined with a easy software install and upgrade management.
If the app store is a sucess, as i think it will, then most users will already have an account and a credit card associated, as in itunes store. and that means that the donation and install of Gimp on mac is just a 'click away'. Now that is a powerfull aid for the 'normal' user wich doesn't want to go around looking for stuff on the wild wild web and the easy install combined with the app store 'top apps' could seriously make Gimp very much visible to the 'masses'. And provide a steady flow of income to the project. Wich could help Gimp and Gimp on OS X immensely.
Just food for thought and my very small two cents for the project.
Thank your for this great product.

If anyone wants to improve GIMP on OS X and put it up on the App Store, for whatever fee, they are free to do that. We can't stop anyone fromdoing that anyway and as long as the changes are pushed back upstream, everyone will benefit.
Now I am curious if some real improvements to GTK+ on OS X and GIMPwould result from this. Currently there doesn't seem to be any interestin GIMP on OS X. Even though there's a pretty well working Quartz portof GTK+, there haven't been any successful attempts to make a binaryGIMP installer from this (as far as I know). I very much doubt thatmoney would change this, but if someone thinks that he/she could make aliving from this, please go ahead and give it a try. In general we (andthe GTK+ developers) are very much interested in getting your changesintegrated upstream.

If Apple doesn't change their Terms of Service for this instance of anApp store, then we won't have to bother with discussions about whetherthe GNU GPL allows this distribution method - Apple will simple removeGIMP from the store.

As Michael says, it'll be interesting to see if Apple revise theirterms for the OS X version of the app store to allow *GPL software. You never know.

This is GIMP based on GTK+ for X11. It needs an additional X11 serverrunning on OS X and thus integration into the system is very poor. WhatI was talking about is the Quartz backend for GTK+ which allows GIMP torun as a native application. As far as I know no one has ever made abinary installer for OS X based on this.

Ooop, sorry, you're right. gtk-osx makes native apps, they link tothat gimp as a success story of theirs, I assumed it was thereforenative.

I've tried to download GIMP both ways, but have been blocked by this Apple message: 'GIMP.app can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the App Store and identified developers.'
Contradictorily, I also got this message: “GIMP.app” is on the disk image “gimp-2.8.20-x86_64.dmg”. Safari downloaded this disk image today at 8:16 PM from www.gimp.org.'
Gimp App Store Mac Desktop
Two GIMP URL are listed on my Downloads, neither of which will open, and neither is listed in my applications.
I have Mac Sierra.
Can you please help me? I’ve been using GIMP for years on PC, which I have abandoned because of serious corruption issues with Windows 10.

poemystic,
Though this document is for Mac OS X 10.8, it applies to later versions, including El Capitan (I just checked on my MacBookPro). Ignore the Symantec and follow the Preferences -> Security part.
Regards.

Open 'System Preferences,” (Apple menu if you don’t have the icon in your dock.) click on the 'Security & Privacy' icon. In the “General' pane, there should be a lock icon at the bottom. Click on that icon, type in your administrator password if requested. This will allow you to make changes in the panel. In the “Allow apps downloaded from:” section, select “Anywhere.” Close the “Preferences' panel, open GIMP. The system now knows this app is okay to open. Go back into 'System Preferences,' “General' panel, and change the allowed apps section back to “Mac App Store and identified developers.”

A better way (if I remember correctly) is to right click on Gimp.app and select open from the context menu. You will then get a warning dialogue asking if you want to open the app (or not). Slelect Open to launch app.

Open Finder, locate the gimp dmg file, and then just hold the control key when you click on the Gimp dmg, and click open. It will then allow you to install/open gimp without disabling any security settings

On the latest version 2.10.8, the directions above will in fact install the 'gimp.app but when executed still get a 'unverified sources error'.
I am using mojave and have security set to install from all sources.
The version I can install is the previous version.. and it took 3 times to get that one to work.

Yeah, I get the 'unverified sources error' but there's a button in the dialog to proceed anyway with an administrator password. Hit that and you're good to go.

you need to go to security & Privacy and unlock the padlock at the bottom with your admin password then change it to App store and Identified Developers, Try installing again when it says it can't click ok then security and settings click allow, that's it
